In an interconnected world, domain names provide businesses and individuals with a unique online identifier: The most important way interested parties can find out more or get in touch with them.

At the top of the risk-list of not protecting one’s online identity is brand reputation harm due to cybersquatting, where ill-intentioned third parties register — as domain names — the trademarks or names of famous businesses or people to take advantage of, misrepresent, or resell at an inflated price.

Why .my?

Securing a Malaysian identity online should be an important strategy for all Malaysian-based businesses. Since Malaysia ranks among the top-25 trading nations of the world, having a .my online identity goes a long way to denote this pedigree internationally.

So what can Malaysian companies and individuals do to better protect themselves online? Read more ……

KRISARU : Dear Domainers, new gTLDs–things like .football, .sailing, and .softdrink. What do you think?

The U.S. has relaxed its grip on the Internet, thanks to a new agreement with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Widely hailed as an internationalization of Internet governance, the move could also make it more likely consumers will see a huge increase in Global Top-Level Domains (gTLDs).

Until now, ICANN has largely been a creature of the U.S. Department of Commerce and has sometimes been criticized as a result. The new agreement between ICANN and the U.S. creates a new international management scheme, under which the U.S. has only a single seat at the negotiating table.

ICANN controls the international domain name and IP address structure that gives the Internet its form. It is also the group that decides which gTLDs, such as .com, .net, and .org can be used.

While ICANN does other important things, gTLD issues are where it often makes news that directly affects Internet users. The group has been involved in discussions over whether to create an .xxx gTLD for adult sites (it refused) and is under constant pressure to create others.

Some businesses fear an ICANN proposal that could result in the creation of an unlimited number new gTLDs–things like .football, .sailing, and .softdrink. The additional new gTDs might require companies to purchase large numbers of new domain names to protect their trademarks. Silicon Alley Insider first reported a rumor on this. The deal should be announced in the next few days.

Update: CEO Aaron Patzer has just confirmed the deal on-stage at TechCrunch50, and written a guest post describing The Value of TechCrunch50 that contains more details.

This is a terrific exit for Mint, which first launched two years ago at TechCrunch50. Mint took the top prize at that event and has been growing fast ever since. Their last round of financing valued the company at $140 million.

In all, Mint has raised $32 million over three venture rounds.

Earlier this year Mint and Intuit had a humorous clash over Mint advertising claims of gaining 3,000 new users a day and jumping from 600,000 to 850,000 users in a matter of months. Intuit sent a letter to Mint demanding an explanation for this apparently inconceivable feat, which we obtained and printed here.

“At this point it’s too early to share details on our plans around www.office.com,” a Microsoft representative said on Thursday. Microsoft launched a technical preview of Office 2010 last month, but the Web-based versions aren’t slated to start public testing until later this year. Microsoft has said that the browser-based Office Web Applications will be a free part of the Windows Live service and will work with Safari and Firefox, in addition to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.

As for Office.com, Microsoft appears to have acquired the domain from ContactOffice, which has its own Web-based suite of tools. As of Thursday morning, a message on the Office.com site warns users that they are being moved to the ContactOffice.com domain.

“As you know from the recent email we sent you, we will be transitioning the operation of your Virtual Office account to ContactOffice.com during the next 30 days,” reads the current message on the site. “As part of this transition, on Monday, June 29, 2009, we changed email addresses in the office.com domain to ones in the contactoffice.com domain.”

Microsoft declined to offer any details about its acquisition of the Office.com domain. A representative of ContactOffice did not immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment.

Update: Robin Wauters at TechCrunch notes that the Office.com site wasn’t owned by ContactOffice itself, but operated under a revenue-sharing agreement with the U.S.-based owner of the site. Source : news.cnet.com

Clinic says former employee left with domain names.

A medical clinic in Illinois is suing a former employee over domain names he kept in his name after terminating employment.

According to a post on ChicagoNow.com, the employee registered four domain names (including one very similar to the clinic’s name) with company funds back in 2002. He left the clinic in 2004, but the domain names remained in his name after he left. The clinic just found out about it, and is trying to get the domain names transferred. The ex-employee is allegedly asking for $13,000 to return the domain names.

This is a common occurrence and a reason every company needs a domain name policy. If domain names are held in someone’s name, it should be the owner. I recommend companies register all domain names with a general email address such as domains@companyname.com. If the domain name administrator leaves the company, the IT department can quickly change the forward on the e-mail address to another employee.
He sold his business in 2000, but kept paying the $20 annual fees for maintaining the domain, which he also used to sell advertisements.

In January, Mr Clark decided to sell it after hearing that another domain – Vodka.com – was sold for $3m in 2006.

“I thought, ‘Why don’t I just try to see what the level of interest is?’” Mr Clark said.

“If someone’s willing to pay that much for Vodka.com, maybe there’s more interest in pizza.com.”

The online auction was launched on 27 March. The first bid was $100, jumping to $2.6m a week later.

Having accepted the latter offer, Mr Clark hopes to get his windfall in a few days’ time when the transaction is completed.

He said he now regretted not buying more domain names in the 1990s.

DID YOU MISS THE PRIORITY ENTRY PERIOD LAST YEAR?

NO WORRIES! PUBLIC REGISTRATION OPENS ON TUESDAY, 25TH MARCH 2008.

NOW YOU CAN REGISTER FOR OUR NEW SHORTER INTERNET ADDRESS COMPANYNAME.MY

Why get a shorter address? Shorter Internet address will offer you the following :

1) You will gain an impactful identification mark within the global Internet community as it is easier to remember

2) You can span across any industry (as the name will no longer need any categorization of type of entity) to promote your products and services

3) You are protecting your intellectual property & brand name. Failure to register your name using shorter suffix companyname.my leaves it open for other entities/parties to take up the name, that may result in trademark issues later

4) It is faster and quicker for foreign Internet communities to recognize you as a Malaysian brand selling to the global market

This registration is open to the public and applications will be processed on a FIRST COME FIRST SERVED BASIS. SO HURRY! to secure your Internet address.
