An iron that prevents inattentive users from burning their shirts has been developed by retailers.

The £57 Auto Lift iron from appliances company Ariete has micro-sensors embedded in the handle so it ‘knows’ when it is not being held or used.

When it senses it has been left face down the feet automatically extend to raise the 2.3 KW steam iron an inch and prevent the hot plate from burning through clothes.

Picking up the anti-drip iron causes the feet to instantly retract again and the Auto Lift also shuts off if left unused for eight minutes to minimise fire risk.

”The innovative patented auto-lifting system makes it the only iron that can rise and fall at the touch of a hand.”

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) cautioned that common sense should always prevail over new developments in technology.
There are more ways to lower your household’s energy bills than by simply remembering to shut the lights off when you leave. The kinds of lightbulbs you use, the number of trees around your home, how old your appliances are, and even what your appliances do when you think they’re turned off can all have an impact. Here are some ways to lower their costs.

These New Year’s resolutions won’t make you look fabulous in time for swimsuit season or add 10 years to your life. Instead, your reward will be a fatter wallet and maybe a cleaner conscience, because this is about saving energy.

You can pay for the bubbly next year with all the money you save.

The average household uses about 20 percent more electricity than it did 20 years ago. Flat-screen televisions, cellphones, video games and iPods can really add up, not to mention much bigger houses.

Ways to tame the energy beast in your home:

Get junior to shut off that Xbox when he’s not riding. Video game consoles collectively use as much power.

Get into the spirit and replace those incandescent holiday lights with a string of LED lights.

Replace the five most-used light bulbs in your house with Energy Star compact fluorescent bulbs.

Kill the vampires. Energy vampires are devises that use energy even when they are turned off. One study said standby power can suck up as much as 10 percent of your electricity bill.

Turn down the thermostat when you aren’t home or snoozing. Better yet, buy a programmable thermostat that will cover you in case you forget.

Plant a tree. Trees that lose their leaves in the fall can help cool your house in the summer and let sun and warmth in during the winter.

Buy appliances only with Energy Star ratings. A new clothes washer with an Energy Star rating.

New heating and cooling systems can slash your energy costs. Replacing a central air conditioner.

Seal air leaks and add insulation to block heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer.
