Technical institutes in India churn out around six lakh students every year but none of their innovative projects are considered worthy of patent. Projects like the ‘black box’ system installed in cars in U.S. and UK to detect a genuine accident is also done by a group of students from Latur-based Women Polytechnic Institute in Maharashtra but was not recognized, reports Times of India.

“Did these Latur students not deserve recognition for their idea? This project was not considered worthy enough for an auto show here,” said Anil Gupta, IIM-A professor and founder of National Innovation Foundation (NIF) and Sristi.

Technical member of intellectual property appellate board (IPAB) S Chandrashekhar, added, “We have managed to upload almost two lakh innovations on our website for access for the public. Today one of our prime concerns is the process of ‘evergreening’ where major pharmaceutical companies by making minor changes in their present products apply for patents.”

To trigger innovation spirit of students in India, SiliconIndia has launched All India Engineering Project Innovation Contest (AIEPIC, pronounced as eye-pic) which aims to identify, promote and reward outstanding engineering talent across India. 30 thousand students have already registered for AIEPIC. This contest is expected to bring together more than six lakh students from 3000+ colleges across India to showcase their projects. Next week onwards we will bring you one innovative project every day as we start a new series to recognize various innovation project done by Indian students.

1.	Turn up your empathy quotient (EmQ).
Women are strong in empathy thanks in part to higher levels of estrogen and oxytocin. So it’s no wonder that when President Obama cited “empathy” as a key factor in his selection of a Supreme Court justice, the four finalists were women. How to leverage empathy: Be approachable and empathize with the feelings of others. People will feel understood even if you are giving them bad news! You can use empathy to build consensus around a common goal.

2.	Create an appealing package.
Studies show that attractive people not only make more money, they are viewed as smarter, more productive, and even kinder than others. Women have an advantage because we have more “visual packaging tools.” How to package yourself: Don’t mimic the male model – that’s so 20th century. Use the French women’s model: Dress like a woman and accentuate your best features. If you don’t have the body of a fashion model, do something wonderful with your hair and clothing. Develop a distinctive look with a signature color, accessories, and so on. Work on your posture and how you move.

3.	Reach out and connect.
Women have the social gene and an innate ability to build relationships and connect with people, studies show. Women are natural born networkers, team builders, and relationship mavens. How to use people power: The larger your network, the more career capital you’ll have. So don’t just use your people power to develop deep relationships with a few; use it to also develop a broad network of more casual acquaintances with all types of people.

4.	Speak with panache.
Women routinely outscore men on oral and written tests because they use both hemispheres of the brain – left and right – to process verbal and emotional messages. How to use your verbal agility in the workplace: Use your verbal skills to speak up: Ask great questions and listen actively. Hone your business conversation and presentation skills. Pitch yourself for a move up or a lateral move with interesting “stories” about your past performance.

5.	Be inclusive.
Choosing inclusion over exclusion is a powerful female strength. In today’s modern, global companies, the ability to work well with diverse groups will set you apart. How of leverage inclusiveness: Encourage different perspectives and offer goodwill to everyone – friends and foes. Cultivate strong alliances and be loyal.

6.	Read between the lines.
MRI imaging and other brain research show that women are much better at picking up subtle emotional messages than men are. Women can pick up body language and are able to detect unspoken signals of unhappiness, frustration, and confusion. How to leverage emotional intelligence: Look beyond verbal messages to the real message people are conveying in meetings. If something feels uncomfortable or incomplete, act on your intuition and follow up with a phone call.

7.	Empower others.
Studies show that women tend to work together collaboratively, empowering different members of the team to contribute and accomplish tasks. So rather than seek power over others, the female leadership style seeks to empower others. How to leverage the female leadership style: Create teams and a personal “board of directors” who can advise you – and be sure to include men too. Give public credit to other people when they contribute.

8.	See the big picture.
Women tend to take in various perspectives and consider a larger framework when solving a problem or making a decision, while men’s style of problem solving tends to be more linear and transactional. How to leverage big picture thinking: Use your problem-solving style to uncover risks and opportunities, and bring more creativity and innovation to your work.

9.	Be likeable.
Women’s gifts for relationships, compassion, connection, and empathy make them the more likeable gender. And let’s face it, the workplace is a personality contest too, so likeability is a key factor in success. How to leverage likeability: Smile and be positive – as opposed to being serious and stern – and you will win over business fans and be more influential in your work.

10. Brand yourself.
Use the nine female aptitudes listed above to brand yourself for success.

We all want to enable organizational velocity. We know that as we lead, we not only need to make right decisions ourselves, but we need to help our teams make good decisions as well. But how often do we step in, make the decision and then wonder why our team is not “engaged?”

Many a leader sees himself in this scenario: “Lucas,” a general manager at a major media services company, told me he wanted his team to step up and figure out how to tackle a huge growth opportunity for his business unit. He had the vague sense his people were somehow holding back. At the same time, he gave more specific direction than made sense, given the talent of the people reporting to him. Employees strive to understand the unwritten rules that their boss operates by. Lucas didn’t recognize how his actions signaled to the team that their ideas were not valued.

We often treat collaboration as the cherry on top of the cake, but a better metaphor is the yeast that lets innovation rise. Collaboration doesn’t work as an afterthought; it must be baked into the process for the organization to rise. It is just as important as the “what” of a big idea that garners so much focus. Both the “what” and the “how” are needed to create the vital organizational context that can enable the rise.

Nilofer Merchant, CEO, strategist and author, is a leading authority on creating business strategy to achieve success. She has honed her unique, collaborative approach to solving tough problems while working with and for companies like Adobe, Apple, Nokia, HP and others. A sample chapter from her book, The New How: Creating Business Solutions through Collaborative Strategy will be published in December.
Happier days are here again for India’s super rich, thanks to a rebounding stock market, up two-thirds in the past year, and a still buoyant economy that’s growing at least 6% a year. The nation is now home to 52 billionaires, up from 27 last year and only two short of what India had at the peak of its stock market boom in 2007.

The combined fortune of India’s 100 richest is $276 billion, almost one-fourth the country’s GDP. That is well below the total worth of $775 billion for the 100 richest Americans, but well ahead of the equivalent sum for China’s top 100. Although China has more billionaires–79 vs. India’s 52–India’s wealthiest are worth over $100 billion more than the $170 billion total net worth of their Chinese counterparts.

India’s wealthiest person, once again Reliance Industries’ Mukesh Ambani, has a fortune of $32 billion, more than five times the $5.8 billion net worth of BYD’s Wang Chuanfu, China’s richest citizen at the time we published our China 400 rankings earlier this month. (Wang’s fortune has since dropped along with BYD’s shares.)
