Dave Stevens is a consummate networker. As program and events manager for the Chamber of Commerce in Mountain View, Calif., he attends several events a week, collecting stacks of business cards. When he returns to his office, however, he pitches the cards, opting instead to add his new contacts on the corporate social networking site LinkedIn.

“If I’m connected to someone on LinkedIn, I’ll always have a way of finding them,” says Stevens. “If you rely on a business card and the person moves on, you’ll get nothing but a bounced e-mail.” The updated information travels with Stevens via a mobile version of LinkedIn that syncs his new connections to the address book on his Palm Pre smart phone.

Stevens isn’t the only person tossing business cards into wastebaskets. Frustrated with the limitations of paper, workers around the globe are experimenting with digital ways to exchange contact information. Entrepreneurs, in turn, are racing to develop Web sites and mobile software that ease the process.
Tech-savvy people ushered in 2010 with the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where companies from around the world showcased new products and ideas about technology.

Cell phones were a staple of the show, specifically phones featuring Windows Mobile or Google Android operating systems.

The biggest surprise came from Google, with its confirmation that the company will enter the cell phone market with a phone of its own.

The search engine giant debuted its Nexus One phone, but the major announcement was how it will be sold: Google plans to abandon the controversial carrier model used by all major U.S. cellular providers.

Google could also allow other Android phone makers to sell their hardware through its store, forcing all carriers who support that operating system to compete for customers based on service quality and price.

Google is the creator of the Android platform, which, because of its open source nature and inherent touch interface, has been adopted by major cell phone makers around the world.
Nimbuzz is a new-generation mobile service, designed for the online age, making you more mobile.

Nimbuzz Mobile lets you call, chat, message, and send files on the go, for free. It combines all your buddies from Skype, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, AIM, Google Talk and more. One login, one contact list, all accounts.

The multi award-winning Nimbuzz application enables people to enjoy free & low cost mobile calls, free instant messaging, social networking and other rich communication features, using the internet capabilities of the their mobile device.

At the heart of Nimbuzz is the live Contact list – an always-on, hyper-connected, dynamic address book, enhanced with “real-time-presence” showing at a glance who’s online, offline, busy or away, their status messages, avatar pictures and social community activity. From here, users launch free and cheap calls between each other, IM chat sessions, picture sending, chat-room sessions, location based services and various other communication & interactive features.

Nimbuzz users enjoy the freedom of communicating with friends between any internet enabled device, from mobile to mobile, mobile to PC/Mac and vice versa, harnessing the power of the Internet (Wi-Fi, 3G, 2G, GPRS)

With its mobile, Web, Wap and desktop clients, Nimbuzz is available on thousands of the worlds’ most popular devices across all major platforms – Symbian, iPhone, iPod touch, Windows Mobile, Android, BlackBerry, J2ME, as well as Windows and Mac desktop computers.

Social networks & communities supported by Nimbuzz include Skype®, Facebook®, Windows Live Messenger (MSN®), GoogleTalk TM, Twitter, Yahoo!TM, AIM®, MySpace, ICQ®, GaduGadu, Hyves, StudiVZ, Giovani and others.

Benefits of Nimbizz:

Nimbuzz Mobile free to download and use. Nimbuzz will not charge or bill you for anything. However, since Nimbuzz uses your internet connection, incremental data charges from your provider will apply. We therefore strongly recommend to use the mobile client only with a flat-rate data plan or free Wifi connection.

Save Money: Instead of calling minutes, Nimbuzz uses the internet to let you make free international calls to your buddies. You can also register your VoIP account to call your friends on landlines and mobile phones.

Locate your Friends: Share your location and retrieve the location of your buddies on a map. Great for arranging face to face meetings.

Make yourself heard: If your buddies are offline, let them know you’re trying to get in touch by sending them a “Buzz”. It will start Nimbuzz Mobile on their mobile phone.

Never lose your Contacts: Use the Phonebook to back up and restore your contacts. Contacts will be backed up online. Comes in handy when you have lost your mobile phone.

The modern American school faces rough challenges. Budget cuts have caused ballooning class sizes, many teachers struggle with poorly motivated students, and in many schools a war is being waged on distracting technologies. In response, innovative educators are embracing social media to fight back against the onslaught of problems. Technologies such as Twitter and Skype offer ideal solutions as inexpensive tools of team-based education.

Why force students to yawn over a textbook when a real-life native speaker is only a Skype call away? At Marquette University, Spanish students hone their foreign language skills with frequent webcam chats with their English-learning counterparts in South America.

Perhaps the greatest benefit of using Skype is the radical increase in motivation. A whopping 85.3% of Janet’s students kept in touch with their digital pen-pals outside of the classroom through Facebook.

While many schools around the country have declared all-out war on mobile devices, Wiregrass High School took a decidedly different approach, integrating cell phones into the entire educational experience. Students exchange questions and answers with their teachers via SMS and browse classroom blogs for additional instruction. Moreover, as an efficient collaborative tool, students can quickly trade notes or take a snapshot of the blackboard for later studying.

Many universities have internal e-mail systems and message boards. But getting students to routinely check these systems for updates can be a chore. As a college teacher myself, my students have been required to participate in group message boards, which is a poor substitute for genuine intellectual curiosity. As a solution, Leicester University in the UK turned to Twitter, hoping that the popular micro-blogging technology would encourage collaboration outside of class.
The new worm is affecting iPhone users in the Netherlands. The worm is redirecting users from a legitimate banking website to a fake site. The worm has been identified by security experts at security solutions firm F-Secure, and appears to be predominantly affecting Dutch iPhone users attempting to log on to their ING Bank accounts on the device.

Users visiting the legitimate home page of the bank are unconsciously redirected to an imitation site by the worm, leaving them vulnerable to cybercriminals, who could capture their username and password and use this information to commit fraud. Only ‘jailbroken’ iPhones, a hack that allows the device to run software and services not approved by Apple, are affected by the worm. Read more ……

Today the ng Connect Program hasn’t exactly brought this idea to life, but they have released a new concept car, the LTE Connected Car, which promises the technology to make our automotive dreams come true.

Should the concept ever make it to the factory, be prepared to be blown away by high speed internet access via the LTE 4G network with a touchscreen experience that promises video on demand, gaming, ecommerce, a wifi hotspot, real-time GPS updates, real-time traffic and weather data, and road and vehicle monitoring. On May 27, 2009, version 1.0 was released. Skyfire is a free, downloadable mobile browser that gives you a Web browsing experience exactly like PC browsing.

It is the first browser software for Windows Mobile which can view Adobe Flash content and streaming video.

In Skyfire, a webpage is fully rendered by a server separate from the mobile device, similar to the operation of a thin client. This approach is also used by Opera Mini, and is usually faster and supports better rendering techniques.

The best mobile browsing experience. For the first time ever, on your phone, you can watch any video, connect with friends, listen to music, shop, and browse the web using the full-featured PC versions of your favorite websites. With Skyfire, mobile browsing just works – speedy page loads, full video, images and audio. Read more ……

January 28, 2009 05:10 PM

Research firm Gartner unveiled its list of mobile technologies to watch in the next two years, and the list places a heavy emphasis on things that will soon be integrated into smartphones.

The report, entitled “Eight Mobile Technologies To Watch In 2009 And 2010,” said Bluetooth 3.0 will have a significant impact. Right now, the majority of consumers use Bluetooth to pair wireless headsets, but the next generation will have higher transfer capabilities and lower power usage. Gartner said this will enable a new class of devices and applications for segments such as health monitoring.

Cellular broadband and the mobile Web will play a large role in the next two years, Gartner said, and carriers have already seen an explosion in traffic with popular devices like Apple’s iPhone 3G and the BlackBerry Storm. This trend is expected to continue, as carriers like AT&T (NYSE: T) and T-Mobile are striving to expand their 3G networks, and Sprint (NYSE: S) has already begun the rollout of the 4G WiMax network.

With more and more handsets having built-in GPS chipsets, location-based features will become a key component of next-generation applications. Consumers are already seeing elements of this popping up, as shown by the Android app Locale, which senses where a user is and adjusts the ring settings of the phone accordingly. This type of location-centric application will become the norm, Gartner said, but organizations and application creators need to be aware that it could create new privacy and security concerns.

Mobile banking has seen success if places like Japan, but it’s still in its infancy in the United States. This is expected to change, and Gartner sees Near Field Communication as a way to get consumers more comfortable with mobile banking and payment. This technology enables a customers to make purchases by swiping their NFC-enabled phone near a special reader, and Nokia (NYSE: NOK) has already released a handset that’s capable of being used as a mobile wallet.

Most top-of-the-line smartphones in the next few years will have a similar set of features that include cellular broadband, Wi-Fi access, messaging, and Web browsing. This places an increasingly important emphasis on the user interface, Gartner said. Apple’s iPhone 3G has been a sales hit partially due to its smooth and visually appealing UI, and competitors will be paying attention to the UI to differentiate handsets. But it’s not just about being pretty, as a better interface can make the mobile Web and applications more accessible to consumers. Read more ……
