When a user places a sketchbook on the table, the ceiling mounted equipment recognises it by its size and shape, and projects virtual “drag-off” handle onto the corner of the page. If the user swipes over the handle, the camera takes a digital snapshot of the sketchbook page and sends the information to the touchscreen so that a digital version of the page appears on the table.
The MIT media lab just published a demonstration of a new display technology that will read your hand gestures in order to manipulate images on the screen.

The technology might seem similar to Project Natal, since it gives you control over objects on a display based on your movements. It differs, though, in that the optical sensors are actually tracking what you’re doing through the LCD, which alternates between the image you see on the screen and a pattern of black and white squares that allow light through, providing BIDI information about what’s physically happening in front of it. It’s the first display that’s able to look at you at the same time you look at it, which means the whole system could also be turned into a high-resolution camera.

The new display uses something called a BiDi (short for bi-directional display interface) that reads your gestures to allow you to control objects displayed on the screen. The display has optical sensors which track the location of your hand, and can tell when you move or flick your fingers or whatever.
