MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) today unveiled a new way for consumers to purchase an Android mobile phone, a web store hosted by Google. The company is also launching the first phone offered through this new model, called the Nexus One, which combines the latest in hardware from HTC Corporation with the newest Android software.

The goal of Google’s new consumer channel is to provide an efficient way to connect Google’s online users with selected Android phones. The online experience of the web store has been designed with a focus on simplicity.

Through the web store found at www.google.com/phone, consumers can buy the Nexus One without service (meaning any GSM network SIM card can be inserted into the device), or purchase the phone with service from one of Google’s operator partners. As new phones come to market through this channel, consumers will benefit from the ability to match a phone of their choice with the service plan that best meets their needs. Operator prices and plan details will be featured on the site.

“The Nexus One belongs in the emerging class of devices which we call ‘superphones,’ with the 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon™ chipset making it as powerful as your laptop computer of three to four years ago. It’s our way to raise the bar on what’s possible when it comes to creating the best mobile experience for consumers,” said Andy Rubin, VP of Engineering. “We look forward to working with handset manufacturers and operators to bring more phones to market through this channel worldwide.”

Nexus One Hardware Features

“The Nexus One represents the unique combination of design and innovation two companies like Google and HTC can have when they collaborate,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. “The Nexus One continues HTC’s strategy of offering people a portfolio of phones that meet their diverse needs.”

Internet giant Google.com has lost an arbitration case over the domain name Groovle.com. In a decision released today, The National Arbitration Forum, dismissed Google’s complaint which claimed that it was entitled to the domain name Groovle.com. Google claimed that the domain name is “confusingly similar” to its trademark for “Google”.

The unanimous three person panel ruled that Groovle.com “is not confusingly similar” to Google’s trademark, “Google”. Google has commenced 65 similar domain name disputes and this is only the second time that it has ever lost. Domain name lawyer and Internet law expert, Zak Muscovitch is responsible for successfully defending the “little guy” against the mega-corp Google.

The domain is owned by Canadian entrepreneurs Jacob Fuller and Ryan Fitzgibbon, who launched Groovle.com in 2007. As Fuller explains, “Groovle was created to provide users the ability to upload photos and customize their Internet start page. We thought it would be a cool feature to have a nice photo of friends, family etc., every time you launch your web browser”. Says Fitzgibbon, “since we launched Groovle in 2007, Google, Bing and Ask.com have each come out with something similar”.

The pair are elated with the decision. “We were stunned when Google launched the domain name dispute as we have great respect for Google and have always had a good relationship with them”, said Fitzgibbon. Fuller added that, “Google never had anything to fear from our web site. The arbitrators’ decision that the two domain names are sufficiently different should put Google at ease and we look forward to a renewed positive relationship with Google”.

Muscovitch concluded “Google clearly miscalculated here however my clients are prepared to put this behind them”.

Look for Google’s lightweight, browser-based operating system to debut on mobile systems sometime in 2010.

Google unveiled what it’s hoping will be the new standard in netbook operating systems: Chrome OS. Based on Linux, Chrome OS is a fast, low-overhead OS that boots directly into a Web browser to get you online with as little waiting as possible. We’ve been running an early version of Chrome OS on our test systems since Google released the code to the open-source community. Here’s a peek at what you can expect to see when preinstalled systems debut for the 2010 holiday season.

Chrome OS runs exclusively on solid-state drives, it boots extremely quickly. The early build we played with took as little as 7 seconds to reach a login screen, and then snapped almost instantly into the browser.

Web-app bookmarks in Chrome OS unlike traditional operating systems, Chrome OS offers few controls that you can’t already find in Google’s Chrome Web browser. The most significant difference is the Chrome icon in the upper-left corner, which reveals a list of bookmarked Web apps. It’s as close as Chrome OS gets to installing software. While the inability to install apps as Windows does can be a limitation, it’s also a safeguard against viruses and malware: If apps can’t install, neither can Trojan horses and other nasty bits of code.
Google is known for many things: search, keyword advertising, even a goofy corporate culture that doles out free, gourmet food to all its employees. One of its most distinctive strategies, however, remains one of its least known. Venture capitalist Bill Gurley calls it “less than free.” In short, Google knows how to spread its money around.

Don’t believe it? Google has already shown it can put its software in the middle the crowded market for smart phone operating systems with Android. Read more ……

Yahoo and Microsoft have finalized their agreement to install Microsoft as the exclusive search provider for Yahoo’s network of sites, the companies announced last week.

The deal, first reached in July, still needs to be approved by the U.S. government before it becomes final. But the companies said in October that they needed more time to complete the deal due to the “complex nature of this transaction”, and last week’s announcement is likely the result of hundreds of hours of painstaking review from expensive lawyers.

Under the terms of the deal, Microsoft will provide search technology to Yahoo for up to 10 years, also gaining access to Yahoo’s search technology assets and several hundred employees. It will then pay Yahoo a significant portion of the ad revenue generated alongside those searches.
We are a people who pace in front of the microwave, angry that our frozen burritos are not yet ready. Perhaps it is our culture of instant gratification, or perhaps technology empowers mankind’s deep need for “more, now” throughout the only life we know. Whatever the case, our passion for “now” is giving us the Internet we deserve.

Much is made of hot “real-time Web” sites like Twitter, which, by allowing millions of people to simultaneously send out short bursts of identity, comment and news, also provide us with a snapshot of what a meaningful portion of the world is talking about right now. Search Engine have features that let you see the most common search terms for the day, week and year, and YouTube offers something similar for videos. And of course, the Internet has made the news business increasingly keen on the latest wrinkle of the latest breaking story, as if Tiger Woods’ marriage was a currency to trade, as volatile as the buck in a financial crisis–and every tidbit inversely valuable to its age.

The passion for immediacy is changing the Web itself. There is an unceasing hunger for bandwidth, and the need for pages to load faster, of course. There is also our attitude toward much of the Web–if a page is more than a couple of years old now, it feels suspect, like there might be something newer that has all this information and more, with more up-to-date graphics. Thereby, much that seemed fresh and immediate a relatively short time ago (in human experience, if not Internet time) is now archival.

Google is making its own moves, away from the agreement with Twitter. Last month Google introduced a driving navigation feature for its Android mobile phone system that included real-time information about traffic congestion along suggested routes.
With such strong competition from Mozilla and Microsoft, the only thing Opera can do to stay competitive is to innovate. And one has to hand it to them: although it doesn’t have a huge user base in the desktop web browser space, Opera is always one step ahead of the rest, for better or for worse.

With version 10.10, Opera has taken its biggest step into the unknown so far, marrying the web browser with the web server. It definitely makes it unique in the world of web browsers, but there’s always the lingering question whether all these new features are really something we need, or is it just confusing the users?

With Opera Unite integrated into the browser, the web becomes a read/write affair. You can share photos (10 GB of them), stream music, serve a chat or even an entire web site directly from your browser. At Opera, they have high hopes for the technology.

Though dismissed at its origins, Twitter has become one of the most important ways to keep your finger on the pulse of the Internet. This was probably most apparent when Michael Jackson passed away earlier this year, singleh and edly bringing down AIM, slowing social networking sites to a crawl, and convincing Google that the hoards of people suddenly searching for “Michael Jackson” were apparently a DDoS attack.

Google saw the millions of people searching for the pop-artists name and assumed they had to of come from an automated source, either requiring them to perform a CAPATCHA or denying their request altogether. Realized they were missing a key market opportunity—second to not inventing Twitter in the first place, of course—Google and Bing have both reached agreements with Twitter and Facebook to start indexing peoples’ tweets and public status updates, respectively.

Bing’s Twitter search page is live now, as is Google’s Twitter incorporation. We tried a few searches that are trending right now (Ed: Are we really still talking about balloon boy?), and sure enough, both search engines displayed a few results. Bing also has a tag cloud with trending topics organized by how hot they are.

- New export features which allow you to select multiple documents, convert them into your chosen format and download them as a zip file.
- Indicators to show if a document has been viewed already or not.
- A ‘New!’ indicator that shows you when a new document has been shared with you.

How to access what’s new:
-Select one or more files and then click on “Export” from the “More Actions” menu. Next, pick the format (e.g. PDF, Microsoft Word, etc) you want for your exported files. Finally, click “Continue” and it will create a zip file to download that has all your content. You can “export” up to 500 MB of content in a single zip file. It can sometimes take a few minutes to download so you also have an “email when ready” option to notify you when the zip file is ready.

- “Unviewed” files are in bold, while “viewed” files are not. You can toggle this setting by selecting the item and clicking on “mark as (Un)Viewed” in the “More Actions” menu.

- When an item is first shared to you, it will be bold (“Unviewed”) and marked as “New!”. Once you view this item, it’s listed normally. If the item is updated by someone else, then it will be marked as “Unviewed” again.

XML Sitemap

Create and submit a XML sitemap to the tier 1 search engines, this will ensure that the site and all its pages are indexed (included in the search engine) as this is often a major battle for large ecommerce sites.

Create Sitemap

Submit Sitemap

Search Engine and Directory Submission

Create a free NeedMoreHits.com account and complete a full search engine submission (this will cost you either USD $25 once off or USD $125 for 12 months). These submissions help increase your long tail traffic from the tier 2 and 3 search engines as well as build back links from directories.

Product Feeds

Product feed sites are a great way of capitalizing on traffic from popular product feed sites at the same time getting exposure for your site and products and driving sales.

Local Business Listings

I’d also look into doing a local business listing with Google, Yahoo and MSN. We offer a local business optimization and listing service with our local business listing product they will manage this for you, else you can do this for free at each search engine.

Google is adding some new search filters in the lefthand ‘search options’ panel it introduced earlier this year. The new filters enable users to quickly sift through the ‘haystack’ returned by the default search to find the proverbial ‘needle’ more efficiently.

Users have been able to view search results by category for a given query for some time using the links at the top of the Google search page. Conduct a search on “Tony Bradley” and the default search displays results from the Web. Clicking on Images, Maps, News, etc. across the top will redirect you to the different Google sites for those categories and display the search results for that same query.

That is certainly more efficient than simply scrolling through page after page (after page) of Google search results checking link after link until you find what you are interested in. However, filtering results this way is a bit clunky and does not provide a consistent look and feel for the user. Read more ……

Invitation will be sent to non-developers to its much-anticipated real-time communication platform.

It’s not even released and it’s generating more hype than almost any other web product in recent memory. The reason stems from its game-changing features and their potential applications on business, education, customer service, email, social networking, and more.

So with Wave on the way, we wanted to explore some of the potential of Google’s upcoming product. We have a few of our own ideas and included some from Google Wave developers, but more than anything, we want your ideas, so be sure to leave your great Google Wave invention in the comments!

Project 10^100 is a call for ideas to change the world by helping as many people as possible.

Never in history have so many people had so much information, so many tools at their disposal, so many ways of making good ideas come to life. Yet at the same time, so many people, of all walks of life, could use so much help, in both little ways and big.

In the midst of this, new studies are reinforcing the simple wisdom that beyond a certain very basic level of material wealth, the only thing that increases individual happiness over time is helping other people.

In other words, helping helps everybody, helper and helped alike.

The question is: what would help? And help most?

At Google, we don’t believe we have the answers, but we do believe the answers are out there. Maybe in a lab, or a company, or a university — but maybe not.

Maybe the answer that helps somebody is in your head, in something you’ve observed, some notion that you’ve been fiddling with, some small connection you’ve noticed, some old thing you have seen with new eyes.

We’ve narrowed 154,000 submissions down to 16 top ideas. Which ones should we make real? Cast your vote, and help us change the world.

The logo is already viewable in Europe.

What’s interesting about the logo change is that Google’s official birthday is somewhat disputed: some often declare the company was born on September 15th 1997, the day the Google.com domain was registered. Meanwhile, Google filed for incorporation in September 1998: the papers were filed on September 4th, but Google has been known to celebrate on both September 7th and September 27th. Read more ……

News about any online phenomenon is close to obsolete as soon as it is reported. This is especially true in reporting on the battle for supremacy between search engine leaders Google, Bing, and Yahoo!.

It is not surprising that it’s hard to get relevant information on what recent search market developments mean for the online advertising and SEO community. The search algorithms of these search services are updated daily; interactions between these companies are complex and constantly shifting; proposed corporate partnerships involve anti-trust issues and require the approval of a cautious government.

So, here’s a short history of the recent search engine battles, an overview of where things stand now, and what it might mean for advertisers and optimizers in the near future. Read more ……
