MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) today unveiled a new way for consumers to purchase an Android mobile phone, a web store hosted by Google. The company is also launching the first phone offered through this new model, called the Nexus One, which combines the latest in hardware from HTC Corporation with the newest Android software.

The goal of Google’s new consumer channel is to provide an efficient way to connect Google’s online users with selected Android phones. The online experience of the web store has been designed with a focus on simplicity.

Through the web store found at www.google.com/phone, consumers can buy the Nexus One without service (meaning any GSM network SIM card can be inserted into the device), or purchase the phone with service from one of Google’s operator partners. As new phones come to market through this channel, consumers will benefit from the ability to match a phone of their choice with the service plan that best meets their needs. Operator prices and plan details will be featured on the site.

“The Nexus One belongs in the emerging class of devices which we call ‘superphones,’ with the 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon™ chipset making it as powerful as your laptop computer of three to four years ago. It’s our way to raise the bar on what’s possible when it comes to creating the best mobile experience for consumers,” said Andy Rubin, VP of Engineering. “We look forward to working with handset manufacturers and operators to bring more phones to market through this channel worldwide.”

Nexus One Hardware Features

Display: 3.7″ AMOLED 480×800 WVGA display

“The Nexus One represents the unique combination of design and innovation two companies like Google and HTC can have when they collaborate,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. “The Nexus One continues HTC’s strategy of offering people a portfolio of phones that meet their diverse needs.”

Look for Google’s lightweight, browser-based operating system to debut on mobile systems sometime in 2010.

Google unveiled what it’s hoping will be the new standard in netbook operating systems: Chrome OS. Based on Linux, Chrome OS is a fast, low-overhead OS that boots directly into a Web browser to get you online with as little waiting as possible. We’ve been running an early version of Chrome OS on our test systems since Google released the code to the open-source community. Here’s a peek at what you can expect to see when preinstalled systems debut for the 2010 holiday season.

Chrome OS runs exclusively on solid-state drives, it boots extremely quickly. The early build we played with took as little as 7 seconds to reach a login screen, and then snapped almost instantly into the browser.

Web-app bookmarks in Chrome OS unlike traditional operating systems, Chrome OS offers few controls that you can’t already find in Google’s Chrome Web browser. The most significant difference is the Chrome icon in the upper-left corner, which reveals a list of bookmarked Web apps. It’s as close as Chrome OS gets to installing software. While the inability to install apps as Windows does can be a limitation, it’s also a safeguard against viruses and malware: If apps can’t install, neither can Trojan horses and other nasty bits of code.
Google is known for many things: search, keyword advertising, even a goofy corporate culture that doles out free, gourmet food to all its employees. One of its most distinctive strategies, however, remains one of its least known. Venture capitalist Bill Gurley calls it “less than free.” In short, Google knows how to spread its money around.

And that’s a strategy that gives Google a chance to do something Linux vendors, and Apple, have failed to do: wrest a huge piece of the market for desktop operating systems away from Microsoft. Don’t believe it? Google has already shown it can put its software in the middle the crowded market for smart phone operating systems with Android. Read more ……

Yahoo and Microsoft have finalized their agreement to install Microsoft as the exclusive search provider for Yahoo’s network of sites, the companies announced last week.

The deal, first reached in July, still needs to be approved by the U.S. government before it becomes final. But the companies said in October that they needed more time to complete the deal due to the “complex nature of this transaction”, and last week’s announcement is likely the result of hundreds of hours of painstaking review from expensive lawyers.

Under the terms of the deal, Microsoft will provide search technology to Yahoo for up to 10 years, also gaining access to Yahoo’s search technology assets and several hundred employees. It will then pay Yahoo a significant portion of the ad revenue generated alongside those searches.
We are a people who pace in front of the microwave, angry that our frozen burritos are not yet ready. Perhaps it is our culture of instant gratification, or perhaps technology empowers mankind’s deep need for “more, now” throughout the only life we know. Whatever the case, our passion for “now” is giving us the Internet we deserve.

Much is made of hot “real-time Web” sites like Twitter, which, by allowing millions of people to simultaneously send out short bursts of identity, comment and news, also provide us with a snapshot of what a meaningful portion of the world is talking about right now. Search Engine have features that let you see the most common search terms for the day, week and year, and YouTube offers something similar for videos. And of course, the Internet has made the news business increasingly keen on the latest wrinkle of the latest breaking story, as if Tiger Woods’ marriage was a currency to trade, as volatile as the buck in a financial crisis–and every tidbit inversely valuable to its age.

The passion for immediacy is changing the Web itself. There is an unceasing hunger for bandwidth, and the need for pages to load faster, of course. There is also our attitude toward much of the Web–if a page is more than a couple of years old now, it feels suspect, like there might be something newer that has all this information and more, with more up-to-date graphics. Thereby, much that seemed fresh and immediate a relatively short time ago (in human experience, if not Internet time) is now archival.

Google is making its own moves, away from the agreement with Twitter. Last month Google introduced a driving navigation feature for its Android mobile phone system that included real-time information about traffic congestion along suggested routes. - Indicators to show if a document has been viewed already or not.
- A ‘New!’ indicator that shows you when a new document has been shared with you.

How to access what’s new:
-Select one or more files and then click on “Export” from the “More Actions” menu. Next, pick the format (e.g. PDF, Microsoft Word, etc) you want for your exported files. Finally, click “Continue” and it will create a zip file to download that has all your content. You can “export” up to 500 MB of content in a single zip file. It can sometimes take a few minutes to download so you also have an “email when ready” option to notify you when the zip file is ready.

- “Unviewed” files are in bold, while “viewed” files are not. You can toggle this setting by selecting the item and clicking on “mark as (Un)Viewed” in the “More Actions” menu.

- When an item is first shared to you, it will be bold (“Unviewed”) and marked as “New!”. Once you view this item, it’s listed normally. If the item is updated by someone else, then it will be marked as “Unviewed” again.

Google is adding some new search filters in the lefthand ‘search options’ panel it introduced earlier this year. The new filters enable users to quickly sift through the ‘haystack’ returned by the default search to find the proverbial ‘needle’ more efficiently.

Users have been able to view search results by category for a given query for some time using the links at the top of the Google search page. Conduct a search on “Tony Bradley” and the default search displays results from the Web. Clicking on Images, Maps, News, etc. across the top will redirect you to the different Google sites for those categories and display the search results for that same query.

That is certainly more efficient than simply scrolling through page after page (after page) of Google search results checking link after link until you find what you are interested in. However, filtering results this way is a bit clunky and does not provide a consistent look and feel for the user. Read more ……

Invitation will be sent to non-developers to its much-anticipated real-time communication platform.

It’s not even released and it’s generating more hype than almost any other web product in recent memory. The reason stems from its game-changing features and their potential applications on business, education, customer service, email, social networking, and more.

So with Wave on the way, we wanted to explore some of the potential of Google’s upcoming product. We have a few of our own ideas and included some from Google Wave developers, but more than anything, we want your ideas, so be sure to leave your great Google Wave invention in the comments! Who knows, maybe we’ll feature them in the future!

Project 10^100 is a call for ideas to change the world by helping as many people as possible.

Never in history have so many people had so much information, so many tools at their disposal, so many ways of making good ideas come to life. Yet at the same time, so many people, of all walks of life, could use so much help, in both little ways and big.

In the midst of this, new studies are reinforcing the simple wisdom that beyond a certain very basic level of material wealth, the only thing that increases individual happiness over time is helping other people.

In other words, helping helps everybody, helper and helped alike.

The question is: what would help? And help most?

At Google, we don’t believe we have the answers, but we do believe the answers are out there. Maybe in a lab, or a company, or a university — but maybe not.

Maybe the answer that helps somebody is in your head, in something you’ve observed, some notion that you’ve been fiddling with, some small connection you’ve noticed, some old thing you have seen with new eyes.

We’ve narrowed 154,000 submissions down to 16 top ideas. Which ones should we make real? Cast your vote, and help us change the world.

The logo is already viewable in Europe.

What’s interesting about the logo change is that Google’s official birthday is somewhat disputed: some often declare the company was born on September 15th 1997, the day the Google.com domain was registered. Meanwhile, Google filed for incorporation in September 1998: the papers were filed on September 4th, but Google has been known to celebrate on both September 7th and September 27th. Read more ……

Earlier today, we informed you about Google Chrome Frame, a Google plug-in for Internet Explorer that “seamlessly brings Google Chrome’s open web technologies and speedy JavaScript engine to Internet Explorer.” It seemed logical, but we wondered what would motivate IE users to install it.

Google has a plan for that as well, it seems. Their ace in the hole? None other than Google Wave, the highly anticipated real-time communication platform that will launch to the public next week.

Today, on the Google Wave Developer Blog, the company essentially said this: if you want to use Google Wave, Install the Chrome Frame or drop Microsoft’s browser.

The reason is actually one the company alluded to when they first announced their new communication tool: IE6 doesn’t have JavaScript and HTML5 support to handle Google Wave. Apparently the team tried but is going to give up on providing support for the rival browser. In their words:

“Google Wave depends on strong JS and DOM rendering performance to provide a desktop-like experience in the browser. HTML5’s offline storage and web workers will enable us to add great features without having to compromise on performance. Unfortunately, Internet Explorer, still used by the majority of the Web’s users, has not kept up with such fairly recent developments in Web technology. Compared with other browsers, the JavaScript performance is many times slower and HTML5 support is still far behind. Likewise, the many different versions of IE still in use — each with its own set of CSS quirks and layout limitations — further complicates building rich Web applications.

In the past, the Google Wave team has spent countless hours solely on improving the experience of running Google Wave in Internet Explorer. We could continue in this fashion, but using Google Chrome Frame instead lets us invest all that engineering time in more features for all our users, without leaving Internet Explorer users behind.” Read more ……

Recently we received some questions about how Google uses (or more accurately, doesn’t use) the “keywords” meta tag in ranking web search results. Suppose you have two website owners, Alice and Bob. Alice runs a company called AliceCo and Bob runs BobCo. One day while looking at Bob’s site, Alice notices that Bob has copied some of the words that she uses in her “keywords” meta tag. Even more interesting, Bob has added the words “AliceCo” to his “keywords” meta tag. Should Alice be concerned?

At least for Google’s web search results currently (September 2009), the answer is no. Google doesn’t use the “keywords” meta tag in our web search ranking. This video explains more, or see the questions below.

Q: Does Google ever use the “keywords” meta tag in its web search ranking?
A: In a word, no. Google does sell a Google Search Appliance, and that product has the ability to match meta tags, which could include the keywords meta tag. But that’s an enterprise search appliance that is completely separate from our main web search. Our web search (the well-known search at Google.com that hundreds of millions of people use each day) disregards keyword metatags completely. They simply don’t have any effect in our search ranking at present.

Q: Why doesn’t Google use the keywords meta tag?
A: About a decade ago, search engines judged pages only on the content of web pages, not any so-called “off-page” factors such as the links pointing to a web page. In those days, keyword meta tags quickly became an area where someone could stuff often-irrelevant keywords without typical visitors ever seeing those keywords. Because the keywords meta tag was so often abused, many years ago Google began disregarding the keywords meta tag.

Q: Does this mean that Google ignores all meta tags?
A: No, Google does support several other meta tags. This meta tags page documents more info on several meta tags that we do use. For example, we do sometimes use the “description” meta tag as the text for our search results snippets, as this screenshot shows:

Even though we sometimes use the description meta tag for the snippets we show, we still don’t use the description meta tag in our ranking.

Q: Does this mean that Google will always ignore the keywords meta tag?
A: It’s possible that Google could use this information in the future, but it’s unlikely. Google has ignored the keywords meta tag for years and currently we see no need to change that policy.

It’s how Google makes its billion of dollars. Highly targeted text ads appear on Google search and third party websites that are part of the AdSense program. Advertisers buy ads based on keywords, with more popular keywords costing more per click than less popular terms.

This has only applied to text ads though, not banner or display ads. But speculation was rampant that Google would apply its unique and lucrative ad model to display ads after its $3.1 Billion DoubleClick acquisition.

Now that speculation has become reality. Google has just launched the DoubleClick Ad Exchange, and it is just like AdWords and AdSense, except that it is a marketplace for display ads.

First, here is what Google said in its announcement:

“We’ve been working hard to put these principles into practice, and today we’re excited to announce the new DoubleClick Ad Exchange, a step towards creating a more open display advertising ecosystem for everyone. The Ad Exchange is a real-time marketplace that helps large online publishers on one side; and ad networks and agency networks on the other, buy and sell display advertising space. Read more ……

Google has unveiled a service called Fast Flip to let users consume news more quickly and to boost the flagging fortunes of the news industry.

The product is designed to mirror the way readers flick through magazines and newspapers.

Google has teamed up with more than 30 providers such as the BBC to provide what it calls a new reading experience.

The search giant was recently called a parasite for making money aggregating content it did not create.

“I don’t believe we are part of the problem. I believe we are part of the solution,” Google’s vice-president of search, Marissa Mayer, told BBC News.

“We have tried to build platforms and tools that build a healthy, rich eco-system online that is supportive of content. This is a new way of looking at content.”

Earlier this year, Wall Street Journal chief Robert Thomson called the search company and other aggregators such as Yahoo “parasites or tech tapeworms in the intestines of the internet”.

The news industry has been struggling with how to broaden the size of its online audience and how to make money from content it has long given away free.

Last month, media mogul Rupert Murdoch said he hoped all of his major newspapers would be charging for online content by the end of June next year. Read more ……

BEIJING, September 8 (Xinhuanet) — Earlier this year, Google announced it was to launch a new product which would transform the way people communicate on the Internet. Google Wave is now set to arrive and be tested by 100,000 people who have preregistered to try out the new offering from the Internet search giant.

On September 30th, the invitions will go out by email. And Google has also announced that it is opening up Google Wave to some schools and businesses that use Google Apps.

Despite the company not having a set date for release, the excitement and hype surrounding Google wave is growing exponentially. “We don’t have a specific time-frame for public release, but we’re planning to continue working on Google Wave for a number of months more as a developer preview,” the company said in a statement.

This is not just email or a way of sending data to someone else. Google Wave has been dubbed as “game-changing” by Mashable, a technology website. The new Google product, for those having a Google account, is likely to change dramatically upon its launch, especially within business, education, customer service, email and social networking.

Google describes its new baby as “a new model for communication and collaboration on the web” which will enable “participants on a wave to have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real-time.” In GMail, Google’s email system, conversations can be connected in what is called a thread. But Wave goes a step further enabling editable conversations to develop. Effectively it’s rewriting the rules of email, Google says.

In Google Wave a user can create a wave and add people to it. Everyone on the wave can use richly formatted text, photos, gadgets, and even feeds from other sources on the web. They can insert a reply or edit the wave directly. Instant messaging is virtually instantaneous in Wave with text appearing as typed on the recipients computer, thus saving time. Several people can be involved in conversations and in addition private conversations may be inserted into the thread. Read more ……
